Brushes are expensive and can be worn out quickly. With good handling and use, the brushes will "dance" on paper longer.
Properly caring for a brush starts with brush anatomy. There are three parts to a paint brush. Each of these parts require a measure of care to maximize the life of any brush.
The brush should never be submerged completely in the water. It contains natural materials that will be damaged.
Load paint onto your brush like you are scooping soup? I only load on the bottom half of our bristles. Otherwise over time, small particles of paint build up in the tops of the bristles and spreads them apart, loosing the shape.
To take also care of the shape I paint also only with the bottom half of the bristles, keeping watercolor away from the ferrule.
Placing brushes into a container with the bristles down will cause wet bristles to dry out of shape, making them harder to use the next time.
By traveling I try to wrap each of my bristles with a straw to avoid the deformation of bristles and keep anything else from getting in the way. Important is to brush the hairs before putting all the bristles in the right way into the straw.
