Size 61 x 46 cm
Medium Watercolour

Many Weddell seals often stay in Antarctica during the winter. During that time, they keep an ice hole open by constantly gnawing at the freezing water with their canine teeth. This behavior is admirable, and I would like to represent in my watercolor.

Habitat: Weddell seals occur in large numbers on fast ice, right up to the shoreline of the Antarctic continent. They also occur offshore in the pack ice zone north to the seasonally shifting limits of the Antarctic Convergence.
Characteristics: The Weddell seal is a large seal with a bulky body, a relatively small head, and a short, wide snout. The adults are dark gray to brown with dark and light patches on the ventral side and silvery white dorsally. The front flippers are small relative to body size. Pups are born with light gray or occasionally golden fur.

The diet consists almost of cefish, particularly the Antarctic Silverfish which largely dominates their diet in certain areas but also includes Antarctic Toothfish, Myctophids and cephalopods.
Size: 2.5 m long and weighs approx. 400kg

Conservation status: Least Concern (LC=Least Concern).

This Watercolour artwork can be framed and delivered, considering an extra cost.
