A important charackteristic to recognise this hummingbird is that they have long erectile bluish violet plumes covering the ears.
The sparkling violetears diet consists of nectar from a wide variety of flowers and also insects caught in flight.
Male birds weigh 5.8 to 8.5 g and females 6 to 7.5 g.
